You now have an idea of what autism is.  Your next step is to start intervention as soon as possible.  I have read in several sources that an autistic child is much more likely to reach their full potential  the sooner you start intervention and therapies.  The first thing you want to do is to contact your state and find out  what services are available at the state and local levels and what kind of  financial assistance is provided.   Click on the following blue links.  One will take you to the site of the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities(NICHCY).  This site has a list of  the contact information for all of the states. Another site you can access for early intervention programs is  the National  Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center (NECTAC)   Also contact your local school district to find out about services they provide.

Next,  you want to find out if your child's pediatrician is experienced in treating children with autism.  If they are not,  ask for a referral.  As a starting point, find out if there are any DAN (Defeat Autism Now) doctors in your area.  A DAN doctor is a medical professional that has received additional training regarding the Defeat Autism Now  treatment protical  which is a biomedical approach .  The biomedical approach  will be  discussed on the next page.  Your best source of information  for doctors in your area is to talk to parents of autistic children from your town or city and see who they like and recommend.  So how do you find these parents?  Read on.
The third thing you want to do is to join a local autism  support group.  This will be one of the most beneficial things you can do.  There are times when you will feel very isolated and alone and that no one understands your situation.  You will feel like it is you against the rest of society.  Then you join an autism group and you will find many parents that have already been down your path.  They understand what you are going through.  Let them be your support.  You cannot do this alone.  These parents can be a wealth of information.   A lot of times they will know the best  autism doctors in your area.  They will know the best places to shop for gluten and casein free food.  They might know what places give discounts for special needs kids for birthday parties and events. They might know what school districts and schools are the best and who are the best teachers.  Again they are a wealth of information for you local area.  Click on one of the blue links.  These are organizations that may have local chapters in your area of the United States.

Autism Society of America:  On the left hand side of their homepage look for resources near you.

National Autism Association: On the left hand side of their homepage look for local chapters in the menu.
